People being paid to fill out the online survey questionnaire are a bit self-conscious about giving their opinions. They may say defensive things such as, "Hey, I don't know! That's just my opinion. Someone else might think differently!" or, "Who am I to say? Who am I to decide that?"

They need to understand the principle of opinion sampling. The principle of sampling states that with a more or less homogeneous population, a sampling of a representative few will accurately reflect the whole population within a few percentage points. To get more accuracy, take bigger representative samples.

That means, for example, that if a mayonnaise packer and seller desires to know what percentage of the people in Pennsylvania prefers lemon flavored mayonnaise over other flavors, they do not have to ask everyone in Pennsylvania! If they ask a representative sample of Pennsylvanians, say 1,500 to 3,000, which mayonnaise they prefer, they can project the results onto the entire population within a 'margin of error' of between 2.5 and 4%. That's close enough for most marketing planning purposes.

So when you receive an invitation to take a survey, do not worry about what other people might think or say. Your survey info is part of the sample they are taking. Chances are if you think a certain way, there are others who feel the same way. Just give your honest opinion. The survey maker does not care if you are in the 90% group or the 10% group. What they care about is whether the opinions are split 90-10, or 10-90, (or 60-40!).

When people make buying decisions, the only valid opinion is their own, which is only fair, and entirely correct. After all, they are buying the product for themselves, with their own money! So they will act based on what they honestly think. And that reality is what the market researchers want to know.

All opinion surveys, of whatever type, use this same basic principle. It means that to know fairly well what a large group thinks, you do not have to ask all members of the group, just a small representative sample.

This is what makes it possible to find out what people think in an economical way and it makes surveys of all types, including paid online surveys, work and yield valuable information. Because of this, the Market Research people can afford to pay 2,000 people for their opinions because that tells them what maybe 4,000,000 would say if they asked every one! When they pay the 2,000 their $20.00 each for their opinions, it is really only costing them a penny each to know what the 4,000,000 would say!

Now there are basically three things you need to organize. First off, if you are like me who have purchased a lot of products and memberships, record your receipt numbers, passwords, usernames, etc, in an Excel(tm) database. Then name it 'My Account Manager' or whatever you like to call it. When you need a product simply look at this database to find out the required information.

The second thing that you need to track is your monthly expenses and income. While tracking monthly expenses and income is a must for tax-assessment, you need it even more to monitor the performance of your business. You need to monitor how much you are spending and how much R.O.I (return-on-investment) you are getting on your expenditure. Without tracking and monitoring your expenses, how will you be able to know whether your business is making a profit or loss, whether it is worth running, and above all, what you need to change to maximize your profits and minimize your expenses?

I use a cashbook to track my monthly income and expenditure, but it is ok if you do not know how to use a cashbook. An Excel(tm) database will do just as well. Record you monthly and yearly income and expenditure in an Excel(tm) database and name it ' My Income and Expenditure Manager' or whatever you like to call it. There is a lot of accounting software packages available in the market, like Quicken(tm), Quick Books(tm), etc, and if you can afford it, then I would suggest that you purchase one of these software to make your tasks easier.

The last thing you need to track is your advertising campaign. Now, I am sure that many 'gurus' have told you how essential it is for a business owner to track his ads. Do not make the mistake of thinking that a well-written ad will pull in a huge income for you. Not all ads work all the time and even some well-written ads need to be monitored to see whether they are working or not. Keep an Excel(tm) database of all your ad campaigns and name it ' My Ad Manager'. Once you see which ads are making you profits and which are not, you can dump the poorly performing ads and continue with the successful ones. If you are not tracking your ad campaigns, then you are literally throwing money down the drain!

You have decided that you may have come to the end in your hard working career and "going for it" on the net. It's been a few years and you have yet to make the money that you read about, hoped for, and dreamed about. The wife tells you "well, at least you tried..." The kids continue their interruptions never becoming used to you actually working on the pc, rather than playing games. Frustration has packed a tent and camped on your shoulders. What was it? Why is it you tried promoting each and every product as if they were you own. Why!! Relax. I have a bit of news for you and it's all good.

True story, about a year ago I found myself extremely frustrated. I was not doing so badly in life, I just wanted more. I wanted to live not from check to check, but to have a bit of money in the bank where I did not have to worry about getting to the bank before the mortgage check hit. I wanted to be able to take a vacation to somewhere other than the same fifty-mile trip we took year after year. I was not asking for a handout, I was truly working at it. There were days that I put in twenty hours between my outside job, you know the one where I got a check, and my "own business" where I seemed to work and work and have little profit.

I stuck with the affiliate marketing. After an up and down on the EBay train, I thought the shipping and feedback stuff was a bit too much. With affiliate marketing I had the best of all worlds, I get paid and would not have to touch a thing. Oh yeah, I would put all my concentration into affiliate marketing. I did some research and decided to go with a reputable product. I did some research and felt pretty confident about what I was marketing. Well, needless to say after some hard work, I made about $300 in a month's time, not a shout, but it was better than nothing.

While surfing for ideas to promote and be more effective I came across hundreds of products and much of them seemed to be like me, marketing something for someone else. I took my time and selected one. It was seemingly smart. I read the course and felt confident about the first few pages. After about a day of reading and highlighting I put the system to work. Through the system tactics I made $122.00 for the month. Wait a minute! I made almost two hundred less, not including the twenty dollars I paid for the program and forty dollars for add on material. I wasn't happy.

I went back to the system I was using. I figure I made $300, perhaps, if I practiced this system better, I could do better. I repeated what I did the month before, but did so with a bit more aggression and yep here it is I made $377.00. Ok, something is right.

Yet, while I was happy, what was it I was missing? It was like setting the mousetrap, but not catching the mouse. Was the cheese to hard, the peanut butter to moist? So I re-read the program and found something I thought I was missing. My third month of dedication to my working system was the baby I was waiting for! I made a profit of, get this $2872.00! Yeah! The kids do not bother me now! Wife says, "Are you going to work in your office, home office mind you. I felt great!

It has been ten months and some days since I found out what it was that was keeping me from making the profits you can make with Affiliate Marketing. People are often looking for the best way, or the easiest way to earn money working at home. There are many different options to choose from, so how do you sort out and find the home business model that returns the quickest results, especially, if you are new to the online world. In my experience, I have found that network marketing is a perfect fit for me, and a great way to earn money working at home.

So what is Network Marketing? With this business model, the "Company" has agents or affiliates that sell the company's products in return for a fee or commission. Usually the affiliate pays a monthly membership fee, which covers training, support, a website, hosting, and other benefits. However, this is where it gets interesting. The affiliate refers other affiliates and earns a monthly bonus from the referred people. Not only that, but also any sales made by the referred affiliate, (sales could be products or more referred affiliates), results in extra commissions for you. This can go multiple levels deep.

Obviously, the big advantage with this model is that you earn money from your product sales, your team's product sales, and monthly bonuses from your direct enrollees' and their enrollees', several levels deep. You can make residual, leveraged income from referring one person, but the more affiliates you refer, the more money you will earn working at home, in the long term.

You have two choices for promoting your Network Marketing business (yes, it is actually a business). You can promote it offline with flyers, newspaper ads, or meeting and talking to prospects. Alternatively, you can do all your marketing online, from the comfort of your own home. Talking to prospects offline can be very time consuming, so you should qualify prospects up-front with questions designed to check their interest and suitability. You need to spend most of your time with targeted people who have a real interest in what you have to offer.

Me personally, I prefer to market my business online. Your reach is far greater with this method with a lot less work. You can ATTRACT targeted prospects and spend your time on people who are interested. Most Network Marketing companies give you a website to promote that has your links in it. I always think that it is much better to have your own landing page with lead capture and autoresponder follow-up. You then have more chances to make the sale. Once you have people in your team, it is very important to follow-up and support these members to ensure that they get off to a fast start.

Once you have your systems in place, it is time to drive targeted traffic to your landing page. You can create a blog with a link to your site, add content, and each time you make a post, "ping" to alert the blog directories (I use Pingoat.com). In addition, you can write articles and submit to the article directories with a link pointing back to your site. Once you are generating an income, you can then invest in PPC (pay per click) advertising, for example, Google Adwords. However, do your homework first if you are new to PPC, because it can be very costly if you do not know what you are doing.

Now, I am not saying that Network Marketing is the ONLY way to earn money working at home, but it is one of the better ways to go if you operate it like a "real" business. This is especially true if you like the idea of earning residual income month after month.

One of the biggest mistakes new home-based business owners make is trying to do everything from square one.

You can rest assured that whatever you are attempting to do or build, it has already been done.

Sure, it probably won't be a mirror image of what you're doing, but it will have many of the same basic ingredients.

The fastest and easiest way to get your business going and growing is by finding others who have already done what you want to do; then learn and benefit from their efforts.

A local businessperson recently told me he was in the process of building an auto responder. Of course, this wouldn't be a strange thing to do if it was a service he plans to sell, but it has nothing to do with his business!

Instead of investing a few hours to explore those auto responders already in existence, he is investing well over a hundred hours trying to build one on his own so he can communicate with his customers.

By only conducting a couple of hours research, he would have discovered a variety of outstanding, affordable auto responder services, which are highly sophisticated and subject to continual upgrading and improvement to keep up with ever-changing technology and consumer needs.

Imagine the kind of business he could have generated for himself, if he focused those one hundred plus hours, acquiring new customers for his business and expanding and improving on his products and services!

Unfortunately, like him, many new home business owners still have the employee mindset -- that they have to work relentlessly and do everything alone.

They have not yet developed the entrepreneurial mindset that understands you have to work smarter, not harder.

Another time-consuming task many new business owners take on is spending hours, even days, trying to design the perfect logo. I'm embarrassed to say I spent DAYS searching the Internet for sample logos, looking for ideas, and then sitting and drawing possible logo after logo.

Most people have more creative flair in their big toe than I have in my entire body, yet I thought that if I put enough time into it, even though it meant not focusing on increasing business, the perfect logo would reveal itself.

I eventually abandoned the obsession and as soon as I handed the project over to my web designer, I had a new, effective and eye-catching logo within 24 hours.

It was a costly mistake. I had spent so many years working in a support capacity that I did not know how to make the shift to a leader capacity and delegate the task.

(Even more important, I later realized, having a logo is 'waaaay' down on the priority scale and does not even have to be considered during the start-up period.)

As you start your business, consider the following tasks and ask yourself if someone else could be doing them while you focus on building:

- designing brochures and marketing material

- creating your web site

- setting up your voice mail and e-mail

- purchasing supplies and equipment

- stuffing envelopes and taking them to the post office, or delivering flyers

- market research

- hooking up your new computer, modem, fax and installing software

- trouble shooting computer problems

- writing articles, reports, or white papers

These are not revenue generating activities and if you find them challenging or time-consuming, delegate these tasks to someone else like a family member, co-op student, or part-time assistant.

For the more specialized items, seek the input of a mastermind member or business colleague on how they handle those responsibilities. Also, hire or barter with experts in marketing, web design, and technology.

Another wheel you do not need to re-invent is that of processes, particularly in the area of marketing.

Marketing may not be your forte, yet it is the most important element of your business. This is where many new home business owners bury themselves.

The good news is you do not have to develop your marketing process by trial and error.

Commit several days to studying other businesses both in and outside of your industry.

How do they promote themselves? How do they collect leads? How do they convert leads?

In other words, how do they catch the attention of potential customers, get them to express an interest to learn more, and how do they get them to ultimately pull out their wallets and buy?

The quickest and easiest way to create winning processes is to study already successful businesses, then model what they do.

Sign up for their newsletters and request additional information. Let them begin a courtship with you and pay attention to what they are doing. Buy a product or two and see what tools they use to keep inviting you back for more.

This does not mean copy them word for word or action by action, but assimilate what works, mould it to your specific business, and add the essential ingredient of uniqueness that allows you to stand out from the crowd.

These are just three simple strategies you can start with today to get on the fast track to home business success.

Again, here they are in a nutshell:

1. Uncover what has already been created or invented, then implement or install. Do not reinvent the wheel.

2. Think like a business owner, not an employee. Delegate, hire, or trade.

3. Model the processes of others who have already achieved the level of success you are seeking. They have already made the mistakes for you and know what works.

Having been a Virtual Assistant since 2000 and involved with two VA organizations I am often sent CVs with a request for work or how to start making money quickly. There is a lot of help on the Net for new Virtual Assistants but very few spell it out from the beginning that it is not easy to 'make it' in the profession

What is a Virtual Assistant?

A Virtual Assistant is a person working from their own office on clients's work. They are fully-fledged businesses regulated by the local and state tax and business regimes. The idea of a VA is that they have multiple clients so are suitable for SME's etc. Many companies would not be where they are today if they had not started in partnership with a VA, the work growing as the client's business grew.

A VA Practice may consist of more than one VA or even employees. It is a business and not a 'home typing' scheme.

What do Virtual Assistants do?

This question for me is a real problem. They can do anything they are qualified to do. I once knew a virtual worker who had a huge server in her kitchen. She worked for a large multinational testing their server software and strength. The only place they could cable it in was her kitchen but she ran it from her office upstairs.

Many VA's specialize in digital transcription. That in itself is a minefield, as you have to be very experienced to cope with all the types of hardware that the files can be recorded on. It is a far cry from the tape based transcription systems.

In the US, there are courses for Real Estate VA's. It is best to find a niche and specialize. That way you know to whom to market your skills.

What qualifications do Virtual Assistants need?

You can qualify by experience or specific qualification - if you have been, a proofreader for 5 years in a company you should be qualified to offer this as a service otherwise you would not have been able to keep your job. I am a qualified teacher in RSA word-processing in the UK to level three but I no longer offer this service having gained qualifications in HTML and other skills as I have built my business.

Can you be a Virtual Assistant as a second job and only work evenings and weekends?

You could, but you still have to conform to tax and other business regulations. Many clients need to contact their VA during normal working hours and so you could have a problem. Some clients want work completed overnight and in this instance it could work.

How much can I earn?

That is down to you. It normally takes 6 to 12 months to get your Practice really rolling. You will have to learn and spend time marketing yourself. You will have start-up costs and overheads that you have to pay for as well as tax, health and pension considerations. You really need start-up funds to get this going.

Can I live anywhere to do this?

As long as you have a reasonably fast Internet connection, you can do this from almost anywhere. I live in a remote part of France with better Internet and phone services than I had in a very large village in the UK. My clients are all over the world.

Is it worth it?

For me it has been fantastic. I have clients that have been with me for over 6 years and new clients in France. I am not lonely as there are plenty of VA and non-VA forums on the net and it is often the case that someone you help on an Internet forum will contact you months or even years later for help and work.

Finally, you will build your own team or "downline". Try to be a good sponsor to your team members and help them out as much as you can. Remember - Just because you introduced them to the business, you are not their boss. Offer them advice and encouragement but do not forget they came into your opportunity to have their own business - just as you did.

I have discovered that it is very easy to let ourselves stay grounded to a comfort zone, even though our whole being is shouting at us for a decisive change!

Whoa! What do I mean?

See, sometimes we know that if we keep doing what we always do, we will be getting nowhere until we change our course of action. Yet, we have conveniently slipped ourselves into the COMFORT ZONE...

We know we have had enough! However... Yes, a BIG BUT! ... We are not willing to change our actions because it has become a habit!

We are habitual beings and this fact is not new. I have learned that if we have a bad habit that we wish to overcome, the fast and effective way to do that is to cultivate a good habit to replace it!

Yes, easier said than done! Why? Most of us can identify what holds us back and what is necessary for us to do. BUT! ... We are just not ready to GET OUT OF OUR COMFORT ZONE!

Our unwillingness to change usually stems from our being comfortable with where we are now, even if it hurts ourselves to be in whatever situation we are in now.

Some will say, "I want to change! But I just can't!"

My response: How much do you want to change? Are you not able to change because you are too STUCK in certain ways or conditions? It is really like hearing someone telling you YES, but saying NO on the inside... Check your comfort zones and you will find out where your worst enemy lies!

"I am not sure what will happen if I were to do something differently! Hmmm... Should I proceed?"

Hey! Nobody can tell me the results that I will get if I did not get to proceed with whatever ideas that are floating in my head! Nobody needs to tell me... Right?

We will not know if something works until we have tried it. We then track what we have tried, to become wiser about the consequences that our actions will bring about. However, without even starting to test for results, what is there for us to track? In the end, we will never know how things will turn out, unless, we actually take the risk to test the waters!

Had enough of going in circles in your life? Do you want to have a refreshing change? Then... here is what I dare you to do! Get out of your comfort zone and do the necessary! Take action! There are not that many scams on the internet as people would have you believe. It is reverse psychology advertising at its best, trying to make everybody believe that their product is better and everybody else's is a 'scam'.

Therefore, with everyone using this negative approach (just like in politics) soon you have a ton of people believing that every course, ebook etc., is a 'scam'. Do you get the picture? When in reality there are very few frauds online. It is somewhat funny in a way. I guess it brings me back to the 'herd mentality', which so many belong to. One person 'screams' and everybody follows.

The truth about internet marketing or marketing online is rather simple and easily compared to offline.

Just as brick and mortar building is your offline store; your website is your online store. Just as your brick and mortar store advertises in the local newspaper, telephone book, yellow pages, and the banner (sign) over his store etc., so you must advertise your online store, somehow.

Just as you need products in your brick and mortar store, so you also need products in your online store. Just as you get to know your regular customers and new customers in your offline store, so you must do in your online store.

Finally, yet importantly, if you do not get out of bed to open your brick and mortar store to greet your customers, you will not be around very long.

Therefore, it is with your online store. In addition, that my friends, is what Frank Kerns was talking about. ACTION speaks louder than words. That is how movies are made and that is how millionaires are made.

The secrets to online are no different than the secrets offline. Why? Because, there are no secrets.

First off, just like becoming successful at anything in life, you need the training and the expertise. If you already have all the training and the knowledge and not yet succeeded, either, you have not applied it, or you need more knowledge.

However, for the most part, the 'Action' is where it is at. The rest comes through trial and error, consistency, and being persistent. No different than offline.

Oh yes, there is one little secret that has eluded me for years and that is this. Making money online or offline has never had anything to do with what you were selling. It was always about 'marketing'. The methods you use to market. You need to know, at the very least, the basics about marketing online, and this is very easy to learn. One of the great things regarding the internet is things change so quickly. This is good; it allows new marketers to take advantage of novel trends and new developments. If you do not respond quickly to new market conditions, your business - and income - can be adversely affected.

That is why you need to have multiple streams of income - so that if your current top earner disappears off Google's radar or one of your many competitors introduces a new product that wipes the floor with your best offering, - you have other income streams to fall back on.

It is like buying stocks and shares - you want to have a diverse portfolio to avoid any sudden spikes and glitches in the market. Alternatively, put it another way - do not "put all your eggs in one basket."

Where are you going to find these multiple streams of income? Sometimes it can be difficult to find even one business opportunity worth investing your time, energy, and money in. The first logical place to look is the market.

It is not easy to get hold of hard data when it comes to marketing and often, when you do get some, they are well out of date. However, the figures below show the UK market percentages of directly sold goods for 2000, a year when the totals spent in this area was $2 billion. These figures were sourced from the UK Direct Selling Association and make for interesting reading.

So how do you get started? Simple, pick one area and do some background research. Remember to use a logical approach when evaluating your options - the key areas to look at are; the company; the pay plan; the product; the level of administration; the sales methods available; and the cost - both start up and running.

If this is your first business, try to start with an opportunity that will provide you with residual income. Concentrate on only one business at a time. Work this until you get it to an acceptable level where it is growing without too much time input on your part. It doesn't need to be making thousands of dollars every month - it's easier to arrange for 5 businesses to return $1000 each, than it is to arrange that a single business will return $5000 a month (the law of diminishing returns).

When you are achieving consistent growth month after month, pick a business opportunity in a different sector and repeat the process. Then do it again - and again. Aim for at least three and preferably five solid businesses. Try to have at least 40% of your income as residual income - this is your baseline.

It will probably take at least 6 months, and possibly more, to get each business to the steady growth phase, but its well worth the effort. This will provide you with a diverse income, which will be stable and highly unlikely to be severely impacted by changes in market conditions.

If an opportunity arises in one particular area, you can focus on that for a period in order to maximize your profits. In addition, if there is a downturn in an , you can always use the income from the other sectors to weather the storm.

When you eventually have your multiple income streams online and they are all working well - always be on the lookout for any new opportunities to add to your business portfolio. You can never have too much of a good thing.
