<title>Year-end Health Savings Account Tax Strategies</title>

The year 2007 is here.  There are several issues to consider if you currently have a Health Savings Account (HSA), or are planning on getting one in the near future.<br />
<br />
The deposit you place in your HSA is 100% deductible on your federal income taxes.  HSA contributions are tax-deductible on state income taxes, except in four states. If you&rsquo;re looking to reduce your 2006 tax burden and put more money away for retirement, your HSA is the first place to consider putting your money if you have not yet maximized your contribution.<br />
<br />
The maximum that can be contributed to your HSA in 2006 is the lesser amount of your deductible, or $2,700 for single persons, and $5,450 for families. Individuals, who are age 55 or older, may contribute an additional $700. Be aware, the contribution limits are pro-rated, based on the number of complete months during the year in which you have a qualifying HSA health insurance plan.<br />
<br />
The deadline is April 15, (or later if you file for an extension), to make your 2006 contribution. If you do not fully fund your account for the current year, you can&rsquo;t make a &ldquo;catch-up&rdquo; contribution for 2006 after this deadline. However, you can reimburse yourself in later years for qualified expenses incurred in 2006, even if you don&rsquo;t have the funds in your account to reimburse yourself at this time.<br />
<br />
In 2007, the maximum annual HSA contribution will go up to $2,850 for individuals and $5,650 for families. Individuals 55 or older will be allowed to contribute an additional $800.<br />
<br />
It is also important to have your HSA-qualified health coverage in place no later than January 1, to maximize your tax benefit for 2007<br />
<br />
To pay for a medical expense from your HSA, it must be a qualified expense. Some of these qualified expenses include: dental expenses, eyeglasses, chiropractic visits, over-the-counter medications, and sometimes even nutritional supplements.<br />
<br />
Make sure you have an accurate record of your medical expenses for the year. Separate the expenses for which you have reimbursed yourself from your HSA from those that you have paid for out-of-pocket. Keep receipts for all medical expenditures paid from your HSA with your 2006 tax records. Place the &quot;non-reimbursed medical expenses&quot; in a separate file, and keep these receipts with the concurrent year's tax records with the year you decide to reimburse yourself.<br />
<br />
There is a 6% penalty for over-funding your HAS. You have until April 15, 2007 to withdraw excess funds for the 2006 tax year to avoid this penalty. Your HSA administrator may notify you of any over-funding, however, they are under no obligation to do so.  It is your responsibility!   Make sure you check into this if you think your may have over-funded you account.<br />
<br />
The minimum deductibles for HSA-compatible health insurance plans in 2006 were $1,050 for individuals, and $2,100 for families. This amount will increase to $1,100 for individuals, and $2,200 for families in 2007.  If you currently have an HSA-qualified plan with the lowest eligible 2006 deductible, this deductible will automatically go up on January 1 to the new minimum.<br />
<br />
Strategies to Maximize Your Tax Benefits<br />
<br />
There are basically three different strategies you can take to decide how to fund your health savings account:<br />
<br />
1. Put no money in the account, except when you incur a medical expense. This strategy allows you to legally &quot;launder&quot; any money used to pay medical expenses.  By depositing money into your HSA, then immediately withdrawing it to reimburse yourself for medical expenses, you&rsquo;re making all your medical expenses tax-deductible. Use this strategy if you are on a tight budget and need to keep your cash outlay as low as possible.<br />
<br />
2. Fully fund the account, or put in as much as possible, based on your budget. When medical expenses are incurred, take money out of the account to cover your costs.  Then let the rest grow tax-deferred. This strategy will maximize your tax deduction, while making your HSA funds available to pay any non-covered medical expenses before your deductible is met.<br />
<br />
3. Fully fund the account, but pay all medical expenses from a non-HSA account. Reimburse yourself for medical expenses at a later date. This strategy will allow you to maximize your tax deduction, and also allow you to maximize the tax-deferred growth of your HSA. You can reimburse yourself, tax-free, at any time in the future for medical expenses incurred over the ensuing years.<br />
<br />
To maximize the potential growth of your funds, you may want to make your 2007 deposits as early in the year as possible. Any growth in your account is tax-deferred, like an IRA. If possible, plan to make your deposits the first week in January.<br />

One question that people often ask me is, "Tellman, I want to start list building like you suggest, but I don't know where to start."<br />
<br />
OK. Let me give you the 7 simple steps to follow:<br />
<br />
1. Choose your niche: What are you passionate about?<br />
<br />
I mean, what really gets you going? What can you get excited about and what will keep you that way? It could be anything from knitting to knees. It really doesn't matter, as long as people are searching for terms that surround your niche, you should do well. First, figure out what it is you have a passion for.<br />
<br />
2. Do some research: Write a list of words that are used in your niche and then, go to http://inventory.overture.com/ .<br />
<br />
Type the words into the blank, one at a time, and see how many searches are done for the terms. If your primary keywords generate 3,000 searches or more per month, you probably have a niche to work with. If you see there are 20,000 to 30,000 searches, then you definitely have a winner.<br />
<br />
Just be aware that the very heavily-searched niches are probably very competitive. You may want to start list building around a smaller niche<br />
<br />
3. Create a unique domain name: Your domain name should have something to do with what you're list building around.<br />
<br />
For instance, my site, MyFirstTraffic.com, is for my beginner's traffic course. Makes sense, right? It makes it easy for people searching to find my site and buy my product, and it makes it easy for the search engines to figure out what my site is about for indexing.<br />
<br />
Just be sure the name you choose isn't too long or difficult for people to remember.<br />
<br />
4. Choose a web host: The most important factor here is dependability.<br />
<br />
Don't ever base your choice of Web host on price because the cheapest hosts may just close shop and leave you hanging. You also want to be sure they have nearly 100% uptime. It's impossible for a host to have no downtime at all because upgrades and repairs are always needed. Just be sure that they have a good uptime reliability factor.<br />
<br />
You may want to delay buying your domain name until you choose a Web hosting company, too. Many of them include a domain name or two with your hosting package. If you're just starting out, you may not need a very complicated plan, but if you're starting a membership site, say, where you'll need to use PHP extensions, then, you'll want something a bit more expensive.<br />
<br />
If you don't know what you need, you'll probably have a tech person working with you anyway, so you can always ask them for a recommendation.<br />
<br />
5. Build a squeeze page: Now that you have an idea about the niche you want to pursue, you want to start list building.<br />
<br />
In other words, you want to gather a group of people who are hungry for information or products in your niche. To do that, you need a squeeze page, which is nothing more than a great headline, 3-5 bullet points of copy detailing the benefits of joining your list, and an opt-in box, which leads to...<br />
<br />
6. Your autoresponder: Autoresponders are services that collect and house the names from your E-mail marketing list.<br />
<br />
They also send out your confirmation messages. When someone signs up for your list, they have to click on a link in the confirmation message, which verifies that they actually signed up to your list. Once they do this, you can send email to them anytime you want.<br />
<br />
This double opt-in process is important. If someone accuses you of spamming, you can get yourself into trouble. You can lose your ISP or, worse, face charges for violating the CAN-SPAM act of 2003, if you're in the U. S.<br />
<br />
Autoresponders protect you from spam complaints. Choose a service that you can afford, but also find one that provides uninterrupted service and maximum deliverability. If nobody gets your E-mail, how can they read it to buy something from you?<br />
<br />
7. Put your list building page on your server: The easiest and quickest way to put your list building page up is via FTP because it makes uploading quick and easy.<br />
<br />
Wise FTP and Cute FTP are two programs that you can use, but there are many others. Using FTP is something you should learn more about if you plan to do business online.<br />

Remember, PPC is only one piece of your marketing strategy, so while you may spend more using pay per click when you first start, eventually your content and hyperlinks will attract free visitors organically, which will offset your cost per sale ratio.<br />

You don't need to be a math wiz to become an expert at marketing math. Pay attention to these numbers on a weekly basis;<br />
<br />
- The number of people who saw your ads, read your articles or received your mailings.<br />
<br />
- The percentage of these people that responded to your ad or article. It's not how many ads you run, but how many people pay attention to your ads that matters.<br />
<br />
- The percentage of respondents that actually gave you their contact information and added themselves to your database. These are the people who have identified themselves as qualified prospects who are interested in learning more.<br />
<br />
If you're marketing through your Website, it's incredibly simple to identify these numbers daily and weekly to track the success of your marketing. Here's how;<br />
<br />
1. Look at the number of unique visitors to your Website daily or weekly.<br />
<br />
2. Divide this number by the number of people who contacted you. This is your conversion rate of site visitors to qualified prospects. If your site is set up correctly, at least one out of ten people should be contacting you and adding themselves to your list of qualified prospects. If you use Google Ads to drive visitors to your site, you can send visitors to specific landing pages and increase your conversion rate to 20% or even 25%.<br />
<br />
What should you expect from your Website? For every hundred unique visitors to your site per week, 10 to 25 should be sending you an E-mail requesting more information about your products and services. Each month, your list of qualified prospects and your sales should grow.<br />
<br />
Before you finish this article, make a commitment to apply this simple marketing math to grow your business. Set a goal for your business. Look at how many qualified prospects your marketing is currently generating.<br />
<br />
Write this number down, then put a diagonal line across it and next to it write down the number of qualified prospects you want to add to your database each week.<br />
<br />
I've been doing this little exercise for two years with my current Website. My goals for acquiring qualified prospects get larger each month as my business grows. My latest goal is 500 new prospects per week. This translates into 6 to 7 percent more business each month. With a little planning, you can see your business grow just as fast.<br />

Once you arrive, click the "Create Your Blog Now" button on the page. On the next page, enter a user name, password, display name and email address. Then click "Continue." On the next page, enter a blog title and blog address. These can be anything you want. Then enter the word verification code and click "Continue." On the next page, choose a template for your blog (this is what your Website will look like) and click "Continue."<br />

Voila... Your blog/Website has been created!<br />
<br />
Next, click the "Start Posting" button. A new page will appear giving you the option to add content to your new Website. Write a title for your page in the "Title" field and then write whatever you want that page of your Website to be about in the larger data entry field below the "Title" field on that page. You can use the tools on that page to change your fonts, make links, format your text, add pictures, etc.<br />
<br />
When you're happy with what you've entered into the page, click the "Publish Post" button. You just created a new page on your Website! On the next page displayed, you'll see a link that says: "View Blog". Click that link and you'll see your Website live on the Internet. Pretty easy, right?! ;-) Now you can wash, rinse, repeat and create as many new pages on your Website as you want.<br />
<br />
But, let's turn your Website into a business first. After all, Websites are a lot more fun once they are making money for you.<br />
<br />
Here's how:<br />

Get back into your Blogger account and click the "Template" tab. Then click the "AdSense" link near the top of the page. AdSense is a simple but powerful program that allows you to earn advertising revenue from your Website. Follow the easy instructions on that page to launch your AdSense account instantly. On the next page, click the "Save" button to save AdSense into your Website. Then, on the next page. click the "Republish" button. Your Website will instantly be rebuilt, now showing a Google AdSense ad at the top of each page on your Website. Every time someone visits your Website and clicks one of those ads, you earn money from AdSense.<br />
<br />
You now have a moneymaking business setup on the Internet. How long did that take? 15 minutes! ;-)<br />

Once you've added your comments, click the "Login and Publish" button; and a link to your site along with your comments will be added to that blog. Some things you need to consider when preparing your e-Newsletter;<br />
<br />
&bull; Frequency &ndash; Make a plan to publish your newsletter on a regular basis<br />

&bull; Content &ndash; Keep the content focused on the audience, don&rsquo;t try and oversell any product or service as these emails tend to get deleted very quickly.<br />
<br />

Step 1: Open a blank word document and insert a table with 3 columns and 6 rows. I recommend merging the top 3 cells and the bottom 3 cells into header and footer rows.  You can easily add the company logo on the header row and your address details on the footer row.<br />
<br />
Step 2: Merge the left side rows of the remaining rows into 1 column.<br />
<br />
Step 3: Add your logo image or Business Name to header area and Address details to footer area.  Do not forget to add email and website URL links here, as well.<br />
<br />
Step 4: Formulate a welcome message to introduce your newsletter and its content.<br />
<br />
Step 5: Keep the information in the newsletter brief and to the point.  If you have more information on your website, make sure you link directly to that article or news/product item on your website. Introduce bullet point&rsquo;s news snippets with links in the left side column.<br />
<br />
You have now created A HTML newsletter that looks like a webpage. Modify colors and graphics to suite your corporate colors, etc. You now have a simple easy to edit Word Document ready for publication via email.<br />
<br />
Save the document for future editing, and then selecting the entire table, copy and paste into an open blank email.<br />
<br />
Tip: Send the email to a friend, or your free email accounts (hotmail, gmail, etc), to see how the finish product will look when your customer receive it.<br />
<br />
If no formatting issues are found after test email is sent, send the newsletter to your predetermined list of contacts.<br />
<br />
Remember: Frequency is the key to gaining new and repeat business, so compiling and sending regular updates will help educate your customers on your products and services.<br />

This is were you should be paying attention!<br />

What was it that made you click that link, opt in for the newsletter or even join up? Take note of what phrases they used. What message did they portray to get you interested?<br />
<br />
Then, create your own slogan or cover letter portraying the same message, but written differently. Doing this will help you become a better marketer and create better ads for whatever purpose you need -- for opt-in lists, E-zine ads, articles, cover pages, etc.<br />
<br />
It is almost impossible to market something online unless you offer a free product, special offer, or a free E-mail course.<br />
<br />
Where most people seem to fail is getting at their target market, such as Internet marketers or people already searching for a product to buy.<br />
<br />
Trying to covert Internet marketers into your down line for any System is extremely hard. The reason for this is that they most likely already have a system that they are promoting and have their hands full. When marketing, try targeting a different market other than Internet marketers. This would include people new to Internet marketing or looking for an opportunity that really works, with testimonies or a free trial offer.<br />

This sort of thing applies in ad words. This is something you will have to think about for yourself.<br />

Another marketing technique is to relate to your customers or potential downline members. Slogans such as, "I was a broke loser, sound familiar?" "I tried this technique, now I earn 2000+ a day."<br />

This WAS a good marketing strategy, but it has been overused lately and a lot of people have seen it. Now, a lot of people do actually make that much money online.<br />

Letting people know how easy the system is and a brief honest overview of how it works and why it will work for them usually does the trick. Making things sound too good to be true doesn't usually work, as a lot of people are not easily convinced.<br />
<br />
Say you actually have people in your downline, but it's not really going anywhere. This problem has a simple solution -- but it will also take a little work on your part.<br />
<br />
Get in contact with them and I don't mean make an awkward phone call. E-mail is fine. Tell them one of the things that helped you build your downline then, at the end of the E-mail, say, "If this helped you, or if you need more assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me at example@emailsite.com.<br />
<br />
Helping your prospects and customers succeed is the best possible thing you can do.<br />
<br />
Sure -- you're giving away free information that may have taken you years to learn. The point of this is, by helping them succeed, you are improving your downline's success rate, ultimately increasing your own success.<br />

This technique is very important and will keep people in your downline and hopefully increase their recruiting ability.<br />

<title>Tips for Affiliate Marketing Newbie's - Is Pay Per Click a Viable Option?</title>

Why you should look into Pay Per Click Marketing if you are an Affiliate Marketing Newbie. Tips and tricks for beginners and why you should look beyond PPC to be successful in the long term.<br />

If you are a newbie to Affiliate Marketing, I do recommend to look into Pay-Per-Click Advertising at the beginning, because it is still one of the more easy ways (or less difficult would probably be more true) to get started in this industry AND get fast results. Results referring to earning commission. No more and no less.<br />
<br />
Using the PPC services of the big three US Search Engines, Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, Microsoft AdCenter, or services of "second tier" Search Engines like Miva, Kanoodle, Ask.com, or Looksmart is still not as complicated as most people believe. It will get harder as time progresses though. Nobody would argue this fact. Also bid prices will most likely continue to rise and not get back to what they were just a few years ago.<br />
<br />
The "golden age" of PPC marketing might be over, but it is still much easier to earn some commissions with it compared to most other, older and more mature marketing strategies.<br />
<br />
Take Search Engine Optimization for example. If you start a new site today, chances are you will not see very much, if any results for 3 to 6 months, assuming that you already know SEO, what is probably unlikely. "Trial and Error" is a concept that translates to years of trying and failing in SEO compared to hours, days or weeks for trying something new in Pay-Per-Click marketing.<br />
<br />
It will not work without spending and loosing some money up-front, while you learn to get the basics straight. Set low spending limits for new test campaigns, if the feature is available. Wait a few days, spending only a little bit of money, and watch how it converts. If you make money, which is simple to find out, by subtracting the number of click, multiplied by the average cost per click, (= spending for the PPC Service) from the earned commissions. If the dollar amount is a positive amount, you made profit.<br />
<br />
Do not go over board because of it, though. You can increase spending a bit, but I do not recommend going full force without a spending limit and buy every click you can get at this point. Wait at least until you have posted your first commission check successfully to your bank account. I would wait even two commission checks with a bit of increase in spending and hopefully commission each payment cycle.<br />
<br />
Also loosing money on the first few campaigns should not discourage you and make you stop. See breaking even as a success and progress. It is not very likely, nor impossible, to make profits right from the start. If you do, good for you, If you don't, try to find out why. Once you did use the services, you will at least know how the process works and understand a lot more of discussions at forums, related articles, and tips from professionals. You will not, if you do not do anything and give up before you even started.<br />
<br />
You should not just stop at PPC though and only rely on paid traffic to your site; especially, if you rely completely on direct or redirected traffic to the merchant where you are merely a proxy in the conversion process without the customer being aware of your existence at all. If you have a site or "Landing Page" the customer sees first, you will get the chance to do something with visitors that do not convert for the specific offer you are promoting via PPC Ad.<br />
<br />
The visitor you paid for is on your site and not the merchants and you might be able to get him interested in something else. Merchants do that too and so can you. Be careful though. Don't create a conflict which could result in a "Lower Conversion Rate" of your "Landing Page" for the original offer. This "something else" should be a "Secondary Conversion Goal" for your Ad and landing page; not just for non-converting traffic, but also as "secondary goal" for the traffic that you actually convert for your "Primary Goal".<br />
<br />
May be a similar offer to the one he showed obvious interest in; remember, he clicked the link from your paid Ad; but then decided not to follow through with it for whatever reason. Similar does not mean the same thing, but from another brand or merchant, but similar in topic. Don't offer another TV Set when you promote a TV Set. Offer a TV Program Guide or Magazine instead for example.<br />
<br />
This goes beyond the topic of this article, but I wanted to provide you with some "Keywords" and "Terms" for further research. You should look into all the other opportunities and possibilities available for promotion of products and services as well, but with long-term goals in mind. Paid Search can help you financially while you get something more substantial going.<br />
<br />
Paid search will only work long term if you really dig deep into this type of marketing and become an expert yourself. This requires many technical Health Fitness Articles, mathematical and analytical skills, and most people do not have them.<br />

I completed an MBA and studied entrepreneurship, and along the way I wrote a number of appealing business plans. Unfortunately, none of those businesses were appealing to me.<br />
<br />
Truth was I didn&rsquo;t know what my dream looked like. I was surrounded by great opportunity but I hadn&rsquo;t spent enough time honing my receptors to know which opportunity was right for me.<br />
<br />
What was missing was the atypical business advice: To find my perfect business opportunity, I had to find myself first. I needed to assess ME before I could even look at the market!<br />

Many of the biggest breakthroughs come from making connections between previously unrelated needs. Visit the newsstand once a week to pick up a publication you would otherwise never read. Watch the ideas start flowing. Collect the ideas that are most intriguing to you. Are there any patterns?<br />

3. Take a Vacation<br />
<br />
Taking a break from your routine is needed to reconnect with your creativity, insights and passions. Have you ever been driving a car or daydreaming in the shower when suddenly an amazing revelation pops into your head? A relaxing vacation can have the same effect on a grander scale. Give yourself time to dream.<br />

4. Prepare Your Financial Attitudes<br />

You&rsquo;ve heard all the advice about preparing your bank account for the big leap, but you must also tune up your money attitudes. An off-kilter relationship with money can derail your entrepreneurial dream. My client Lori, whose business was slipping, examined her beliefs and found she wanted to protect money, and thus failed to take needed risk. Now that she&rsquo;s more comfortable with money, and bolder, her business is thriving! Appreciate money as you would a business partner and create a good relationship with it, before you start the company.<br />

5. Kick Butt at Work<br />

While you develop your entrepreneurial dreams, redouble your commitment to your current job. Do great work for co-workers and clients. Develop relationships and a sterling reputation. <title>Sam Walton's Success Story</title>

Growing Up<br />
<br />
Sam Walton's career in retail began in 1940 when he became a sales trainee in Des Moines, Iowa at a J.C. Penney store. Despite his enthusiasm to serve the customers, Walton was not a model employee. His desire to make his customers happy was so great that he often let other responsibilities like paperwork and keeping the books fall by the wayside. He was almost fired by his boss who told him that he was not cut out for a career in retail. Walton kept his job, however, because of his ability as a great salesman.<br />
<br />
In 1942, Walton was drafted into the United States Army. He worked in the communications division of the Army Intelligence Corps and remained on home soil throughout the Second World War. When he left the army three years later, Walton was married, had a child, and decided to start his own business to support his new family. With the $5,000 that he had saved along with a $20,000 loan from his wife's father, he purchased a Ben Franklin variety store in Newport, Arkansas. Walton was 27 years old.<br />

Starting The Business<br />
<br />
By putting in many hours at the store and implementing a pricing strategy far below what his competitors were charging, Walton's new business took off. By 1950 he had the top performing Ben Franklin store in the area. Walton's landlord, seeing his success, decided that he wanted Walton to sell the store to his son. When Walton refused, the landlord decided not to renew Walton's lease and he was forced to shut down.<br />
<br />
Walton's 10 commandments for business success were: 1) Commit to your business.<br />
2) Share your profits with your associates and treat them like your partners. 3) Energize your colleagues. 4) Communicate everything you possibly can to your partners. <br />
5) Appreciate everything your associates do for the business. 6) Celebrate your success. 7) Listen to everyone in your company. 8) Exceed your customers' expectations. <br />
9) Control your expenses better than your competition. 10) Blaze your own path.<br />
<br />
Determined as ever to succeed in his venture, Walton looked for other rural Arkansas towns for a new place to set up shop. He came across a small village called Bentonville and opened the Walton's Five and Dime in 1950. He made sure to get a 99-year lease this time on the property. The two local competitors in Bentonville did not want to discount their prices and Walton's business began to flourish.<br />
<br />
Realizing he had a recipe for success, Walton began looking for other areas of expansion. He borrowed money and used the profits from his first stores to acquire more. By 1960, he owned 15 stores but he was not getting the kind of return on investment that he thought he would be making. He then made the decision to follow a heavy price cutting strategy and hope to get much higher volume to turn a larger profit. This was not a new idea. The problem at the time was that most discount stores were small, located in urban areas, and focused on specialty items. Walton's plan was to change the way retailing was done across the country.<br />
<br />
Building An Empire<br />
<br />
Walton's revolutionary plan was to have large superstores in rural towns that discounted a wide variety of products. His initial approach was to Ben Franklin. They turned him down, as they did not like the idea of operating with lower margins. Without a large company behind him, Walton opted to go it alone. In 1962, he mortgaged his home and borrowed against everything he owned to open his first Wal-Mart in Rogers, Arkansas, and a neighboring town of Bentonville.<br />
<br />
Excited about the prospects of getting discounts and selection that were previously only obtainable in the cities, rural customers came out in droves to his store. The success of his first store allowed him to expand and by 1969 he had 18 Wal-Marts in Arkansas and Missouri.<br />
<br />
Funded solely through debt and reinvested profits, Walton decided that in 1970 he would take the company public. The IPO raised $5 million and Walton retained 61 percent of the company. The money was used to settle the company's debts and fuel further expansion. By 1980, 276 Wal-Marts were operating.<br />
<br />
An integral component of Wal-Mart's success was it&rsquo;s leveraging of new technologies to improve efficiencies and save costs. Walton knew that the key to success in a low margin business was to rigidly control his costs. Wal-Mart was, for example, one of the first major retailers to use electronic scanners at the registers which tied to an inventory control system so they could know immediately which items were selling well and needed to be re-ordered.<br />
<br />
The success of his Wal-Mart stores led Sam to another idea - Sam's Wholesale Clubs. These would be discount stores that sold to small business owners in bulk. The idea was another big hit for Walton and by 1985 he was considered by Forbes magazine to be the richest man in America with an estimated net worth of $2.8 billion.<br />
<br />
Similar to Ray Kroc, Sam Walton did not invent retailing, he simply changed the business model and way of doing business to make it a much more profitable venture.<br />

One of the things that many Internet marketers do is run forums. Let's face it, getting a nice active forum going can be the key to making a nice income online. The problem with running your own forum, unfortunately, is that you're going to have to deal with forum spam. It's a big pain in the backside, trust me on this. So how do you deal with it? This article is going to give you a few no-nonsense methods to deal with forum spam.<br />
<br />
The first thing you need to do is get moderators. There is no way that you're going to be able to run a forum on your own, especially if it gets popular. Moderators are a must in keeping a forum clean. Offer your moderators incentives to do the job. Maybe give them the right to occasionally post ads, especially if you're running a non-ads forum.<br />
<br />
The next thing you need to do is use Captcha to keep forum spam down. This will at least stop the spam robots from posting. Yes, there is automated software that will post spam without the person having to go to the forum physically. By using Captcha, the robots will be stopped cold in their tracks.<br />
<br />
For the real live human spammers who don't seem to want to give up, there are a few things you can do in order to discourage them.<br />
<br />
The first thing is to ban their IP address. In many cases, these people are running off of a static IP address. In the cases where you're dealing with people who are using computer cafes to do their spamming, this isn't going to be much help. But you will cut down slightly on spam by banning IP addresses.<br />
<br />
When all else fails, turn the forum into a paid access only forum. This will definitely keep the spammers away. While you may end up losing some of your members, the really serious ones will stay and you'll end up making an income directly from your forum. If you don't want to go that route, you can try disabling signups to your forum for a few days. This will discourage many spammers and hopefully send them on their way.<br />
<br />
Dealing with forum spam is not fun and it's a war that isn't easily won. However, by following the above tips, you can greatly cut down on your forum spam.<br />

While forums have their benefits, they also have the potential of creating huge damage to your business. Forums can be a great place to learn new ideas and bounce ideas off other people. But they require a lot of time. More often than not, it's far better to spend that time concentrating on marketing your business rather than trolling the forums.<br />

The following five points underscore why spending time in forums can be hazardous to your site's health.<br />
<br />
1) It's not a matter of if but when you'll get flamed<br />
<br />
The problem with forums is that you never know when things are going to get out of hand. Without any reason or warning, you can become a flame target.<br />
<br />
I can guarantee that at least one person will not agree with you. This isn't so bad as long as the dialog takes place within the forum.  But these online arguments can get out of hand and spill over into blogs, other forums, and through email.<br />
<br />
2) Link bandwagons and useless comments<br />
<br />
One of the low points of any forum is that 95% of the posts tend to be completely useless. Many posters are only participating in the hope of getting some mileage from a forum. For people who own a similar business, posting on a forum is the perfect way to gain some exposure and get one-way links to boot. Many times, they don't add any value to the forum.<br />
<br />
Then there's the typical flood of "I agree" comments. These "valueless" comments can suck an excessive amount of your time.<br />
<br />
3) Everyone's an expert<br />
<br />
There's an old saying, "If everything is important, then nothing is important." I believe this applies to forums as well.<br />
<br />
The problem isn't for lack of experts. The problem is trying to decipher the real experts from the flack. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to differentiate good advice from bad. This is somewhat like the blind leading the blind. Misleading advice abounds. It takes time to acknowledge the good experts from the "wannabe" experts. Time better spent elsewhere.<br />
<br />
4) Old and stale information<br />
<br />
People post comments and information based on what they've read or heard about. Unlike a typical publication, with its overabundance of editors, assistant editors, and fact checkers, forums are open source. You have to do your own fact checking.<br />
<br />
Another problem is information that's just plain old. What may have been true a few years ago may not apply today. For instance, web rings were very popular in the late 1990s. Now, they're simply known as link farms. But there's plenty of information-- old information-- that shows up in search results concerning web rings; much of it in forums.<br />
<br />
5) Writing truthful, thoughtful comments is a fad<br />
<br />
While some forum discussions have their golden moments, many threads are one sided or between two or three parties. I liken it to two groups of people, each standing on opposite walls in a gym screaming at each other. Unfortunately, many times the good comments get stuffed underneath the bad, disrespectful, disparaging comments.<br />
<br />
While forums certainly have their place, they shouldn't be an all too often hangout. Most webmasters would find they can achieve their site goals faster and more efficiently if they focused on their sites rather than the forums.<br />

In the old days, you really needed to read a whole book to get all the nuggets of knowledge from an author. With search engines, you can get to what you need faster and faster. So more people can now publish more ideas. Referred to as Web 1.0, static websites have sprung from every corner of the world.<br />

Fast forward to today. The core of Web 2.0 is the latest generation of user-contributed content.<br />
<br />
The unit of communication has shrunk dramatically. Instead of publishing a book or article, we can publish a simple blog. Just a few words and we're done.<br />
<br />
The speed of publishing has increased dramatically. It's now lightening fast, from the author's very first thought to the moment the reader understands it.<br />
<br />
Multi-user collaboration has become massively parallel. Forums, chats-- people are communicating everywhere.<br />
<br />
With Web 2.0 applications, anyone can easily set up a blog or a shop on eBay. Or even join the major Web 2.0 sites like Wikipedia, Facebook, and Digg. These sites provide dynamic user-contributed content. People now flock to Web 2.0 sites because they can find any idea, or any community.<br />
<br />
What's Missing?<br />
<br />
So if things are so good, what's wrong?<br />
<br />
Well, Google often returns a whole bunch of garbage, because it can't read our minds. That's because search terms aren't expressive enough. Search terms are not sufficient to provide your meaning, your context. There are billions of pages out there now, with text that can only be understood after being read by humans. So with search results, we must wade through pages and pages before we get what we're looking for.<br />

So to solve this problem, why not make these billions of pages contain the meaning, not just the words? Why not create an engine that understands your meaning, instead of just today's simple search terms? Will that work?<br />

What's Not Happening?<br />
<br />
Web 3.0 has been touted as the savior. So what is it?<br />
<br />
It's been 6 years since the prediction of the Semantic Web evolution, with RDF, OWL, SPARQL, RIF, metawebs, and ontologies. It's a deep mess. You have to be either crazy or a genius to figure that stuff out. Another faction has Web 3.0 pegged as becoming a service, somehow transforming unstructured information into structured information. Somehow, if machines talk to each other more effectively, people can access the right information quicker. That's wishful thinking.<br />
<br />
Why will this grand vision of Web 3.0 involving intelligent machines never happen? Because humans will never be surpassed by machines in judgmental intelligence. To be interested in certain things-- that is a uniquely human trait. To belong to groups-- that is another human trait. Because a machine-generated solution, regardless of how advanced, cannot replace humans. In the end, only humans can help other humans.<br />
<br />
What's Next?<br />
<br />
Web 3.0 is about ideas and knowledge. It's not about shopping or entertainment. Technology-wise, we're ready for the next generation of the web, the real Web 3.0. We have everything we need to create that vision. Let me describe that vision.<br />
<br />
Different words have different meaning to different people. Different people are identified by different demographics. There's no need for the machine to understand all that meaning stuff. As long as people understand, and communicate with the smallest possible unit of related meaning: The question and answer.<br />
<br />
By simply matching questions with other similar questions, and by grouping the answers from all the experts, users are given access to the best possible knowledge available from all perspectives. You can thus learn at a much faster rate, bypassing the uninteresting noise for the interesting nuggets of knowledge.<br />

Are You Ready?<br />

If you could benefit from a more accurate search by providing accurate demographics, wouldn't you?<br />
<br />
If you could benefit from a more accurate search by asking what you're interested in, wouldn't you?<br />

The next generation of the web will make use of what we like, what we know, and what we've done to give us what we need. Based on our recent search history. Based on our demographics. Based on our ratings, our questions and our answers.<br />

Given your usage, the system should know what you're interested in, and should show you questions based on the community you naturally belong to. So you will not have to avoid people you find annoying ... the system will segregate you naturally. Also, other people similar to you will, through their ratings, constantly be finding things that are interesting to you. This system is adaptive, so that as your interests change, your search results change with you.<br />

The good news is Web 3.0 is here. And it's simpler than anybody would have thought. The bad news? It's just not what anyone expected.<br />

There are many effective little techniques that encourage forum posting. One of the tricks that helps to encourage forum conversation is to end some of your posts with leading questions. "What do you think?" "How do you do it?" "Does anyone know how to ____?" Questions give an easy opening for the next person to post, just as they help foster conversation in real life.<br />
<br />
If you start a new thread, it often is more successful if your first post is short and asks a question, as opposed to being several paragraphs in length that cover a topic more thoroughly. This is kind of surprising because you might have thought a longer post would be more intriguing, but try it and see! You'll notice a difference. So, even if you've thought about a topic a lot, try not to say much in the first post. This lets other people be "experts" too, and they will enjoy the conversation.<br />
<br />
In writing classes they often teach you to write strong. Strong writing is well thought out, authoritative, doesn't use the word "I," has good grammar, spelling, and punctuation. But on a forum, it can intimidate others so that they won't post. If instead you say, "I think," "Gosh, how do you spell that?", include personal stuff, and so forth, it makes the writing less formal and more like you're sitting across the cafe table from an old friend! This makes others comfortable so they are more likely to open up.<br />
<br />
Compliments about what someone posted before you also helps many of the readers to be comfortable posting because they interpret it as a friendly, gentle place. Whether face to face or online, other people will like it when they receive positive comments or are asked questions. It simply makes people feel like they are being listened to, and we all like that!<br />
<br />
Timing is also important in encouraging good conversation on a forum. It's better to post two or three responses at a time every three or four hours, than to sit down once each evening to post because it keeps the forum fresh and people get the feeling someone is always there for them to talk to. If they check in an hour or two after they posted and they see responses, well, of course they'll be more likely to get involved in the forum than if they have to wait a day for a response.<br />

What are Online Bulletin Board Focus Groups? <br />
<br />
The purpose of online bulletin board focus groups (BBFG) is to gain qualitative insights about prospects and customers. You want to understand their perceptions, attitudes, opinions, and behaviors about a topic.<br />
<br />
A bulletin board focus group consists of a moderator, 10 to 20 respondents, and observers.<br />
<br />
Moderators, respondents and observers meet on a bulletin board focus group web site. But they don’t need to meet at the same time. They can login any time during a BBFG session.<br />
<br />
Bulletin board focus groups typically run for three days. The moderator posts questions and concepts, and respondents post their comments. Observers watch.<br />
<br />
How Bulletin Board Focus Groups Work<br />

The moderator recruits, screens and invites respondents to a bulletin board focus group.<br />

But, rather than meet face-to-face, participants login to a secure (https) bulletin board web site, using a username and password.<br />

This is how you use bulletin board focus groups for concept testing.<br />
<br />
The moderator presents concepts on the BBFG web site. This is where you can show products, ads, messages and web sites. The moderator shows concepts using several formats: written descriptions, images, video clips or web sites.<br />
<br />
Respondents mark-up concepts, using mark-up tools available with BBFG technology. For example, they can highlight words and images they like and dislike. And they can add their comments about specific items in the concept.<br />
<br />
You gain valuable voice of the customer information about your concepts. You see specific words, sentences and images that respondents like and dislike. They reveal their feelings and thoughts about your concepts.<br />
<br />
You can see if customers’ perceptions about concepts match up with your perceptions.<br />
<br />
Another useful BBFG tool is “uninfluenced answers.” The moderator can control when respondents see other respondents’ posts.  With the uninfluenced answer feature turned on, respondents must answer a question before they can see answers from other respondents about the question. The moderator can reduce group bias, using the uninfluenced answer feature. Uninfluenced answers are an ideal tool for concept testing.<br />

Using bulletin board focus groups, you can assess customers' or prospects’ reactions to product concepts, ads, messages and web sites quickly. You get rich, voice-of-the-customer, word-for-word quotes and actionable insights.<br />

But who is your competition?<br />

You. You are your own best competition.<br />

As a business owner you need to pay attention to what other businesses do (both online and in brick-and-mortar counterparts). In the end, however, you are in competition with yourself first and foremost.<br />

When you compete against yourself, you are better able to learn what you can from mistakes you’ve made in the past and improve. When you focus too much on what someone else is doing, you are less able to evaluate what mistakes you have made (or are making). In the end, you may not have the ability to be objective about how you are doing as a business because you are spending too much time concentrating on a business you don’t own.<br />

Maybe this is the year you can start a new and healthy competition – with yourself.<br />

Peeking through the windows of how software is designed and development can add to your income. With the technology that has evolved today, we all use computer programs that we like. A lot of software developers start from scratch using various computer languages to develop new and exciting software.<br />

There is a lot of freeware that is offered under license for use and free to change as long as you don’t change certain things that are written into the program. "You didn’t start the fire," it was already burning when you arrived at the desired spot to write genuine programs and games for fun or profit.<br />
<br />
The software that you use can be enhanced or made better. This is where you fit in. The wheel has already been invented. So why would you try to accomplish building the wheel over again? Why not enhance it? The evolution of the wheel has advanced man into the future so far that we now have cars. In other words, the program or software that you want to create can or may be the idea of someone else. I'm not telling you to steal or infringe on anyone's copyrights or trade secrets. However, once you become proficient in computer programming, why not write your own program to do what your favorite software can do? This process can take a few hours or longer to develop. But once the software is completed, you can market it to increase your income. Your product can be as good as Lager Corporation’s product. Usually the outcome is better than you would expect.<br />
<br />
You can also hire someone to write a program specifically for you. This program can be as simple or complex as you desire. Look at the trends of our world today. What’s hot or in demand? Create a new product and promote it. <br />
Peek through the windows, now tell me-- what did you see? You should have seen the inner workings of computers and software programs that you can help evolve into something useful, creative and new.<br />

<title>Real Estate and the Internet</title>

Hello and Welcome to Real Estate Channel TV.  My name is Rey Ybarra and I host and produce this dynamic Internet On Demand program.  Times have definitely changed in this era of digital on demand programming, especially for the Real Estate industry.  This industry has changed dramatically over the last few years, and with this change, many professionals in this multi-billion dollar industry have had to change with it.<br />
<br />
As we are now approaching the midway point of 2007, I am absolutely amazed at how quickly technology is reshaping how business is being done, especially over the Internet.  As a TV talk show host, I have seen first-hand the efficiency and quickness of digital programming.  According to the NAR, 94% of all real estate transactions begin on the Internet.  The remaining percentages are split up with newspaper ads and For Sale signs listing properties.<br />
<br />
This is an incredible shift!  What this shift represents to me is how many people conduct business on the Internet.  We are a society that is so pressed for time that time is now among the most precious commodities we have.  You can say that now we all live in "digital time" created by the Internet.  For the Real Estate entrepreneur, this can be a great advantage for you.  The playing field has now been leveled and you can compete with the Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 companies
